Ever wake up with extreme neck pain?

Well if you have, I’m sure you have felt like your neck was stuck, or worse yet, it actually was stuck. When it feels this way, obviously something is going on that shouldn’t be going on, and if you’ve ever felt this way, you know how bad it can get.

So what’s the deal? How can you go to bed one night seemingly fine, and wake up the next morning all locked up, not being able to move? How can this be? Did I sleep in the wrong position?

Usually a lot of questions arise when I consult with a patient who comes in to see me with this type of pain. The main consistent historical finding, or what the patient relates to me is that “it just came out of nowhere”. When this type of unexpected neck pain occurs, when the individual is unable to move their neck when they wake up in the morning, the most common diagnosis is known as “Torticollis”.

Torticollis comes from the Latin words of “torti” which means “twisted” and “collis” which means “neck”. So the words combined literally mean “twisted neck”. Which pretty much sums up the way it looks, and certainly the way it feels.

Another term for this condition is something known as “wry neck”. Basically it is similar to a really bad muscle spasm, almost similar to the sensation of a “Charlie-horse”, but in the case of Torticollis, it occurs in the neck.

Another historical finding, or what the patient relates to me, is the fact that they awoke with it in the morning after sleeping with the air conditioner or cold air blowing in the room in which they were sleeping. Often times as well, you may have just finished having a cold, or flu virus. Lastly, trauma such as a motor vehicle accident may cause a Torticollis as well.

Like I said earlier though, many times torticollis patients don’t really know why or what caused this condition, i.e., they really didn’t do anything to get this, or deserve this.The torticollis is characterized by very sharp pain and spasms, and an inability to move the neck at all, or if you do try to move it, extremely sharp pain is accompanied.

This sharp pain can be extremely limiting, from your day to day activities, as well as your ability to be productive and perform your job.

If you don’t do anything at all, torticollis and the extreme neck pain will ultimately improve over a 2 week period. In my practice, and with chiropractic in general, Torticollis will resolve over a couple of days. If you happen to get better after one or two days (hopefully) without doing anything at all, then you probably didn’t have torticollis.

In fact, I often see patients who have never been to the chiropractor before, because they would rather try to end their pain quickly vs waiting it out over a period of 2 weeks. In this situation, they are so desperate, desperate to resume their fun activities, to just going back to work, or feeling like their old self.

Of course taking prescriptive pain medication is always an option, but many of my patients have the attitude of “been there done that”, they are tired of the way that that makes them feel.

Unfortunately, sometimes torticollis can last longer then a month, and in rare cases even longer, without treatment. So I would strongly recommend getting treatment ASAP.

The 3 most common finding of Torticollis are:

1. spasms of the neck muscles

2. Shoulder, side of the neck, upper back, and neck pain.

3. Neck being twisted to one side of the other, and feeling stuck in this position.

So what are the best solutions for Torticollis pain relief?

Well, ideally not getting in the first place right?

I say that half jokingly, but truthfully as well.

Like anything, prevention is the best medicine, but unfortunately, in the real world, prevention is really hard to sell. Having great posture, great muscle balance, flexibility, endurance, and strength are certainly great prophalactic variables for avoiding torticollis in the first place.

Getting regular chiropractic care is a sure way to avoid ever having acute torticollis as well. But if you happen to be in a full blown episode of acute torticollis, analgesics do help immensely, because a lot the pain is caused from the muscles being in spasms.

When I broadsided a car going 50 miles per hour, I was elated that there was no blood, and we all walked away. A teenager pulled out in front of me, and I was so glad he was OK. But the next day, and the following two years, I was not OK. I suffered severe whiplash, and fell into years of chronic back pain.

The impact of the crash was taken by my arms, which whipped my neck forward and back, the event known as whiplash. Following whiplash, here is what happens.

Neck Care

First, the muscles and ligaments of the neck are torn and traumatized. They become inflamed, and the neck stiffens.

The normal curve in the neck disappears, and the neck bones stack up in a straight line. If the whiplash is severe enough it damages the discs in the neck and the nerves from the spinal cord. Even blood vessels and the bones themselves can be injured. Injury happens to both the back or the front of the neck, depending on whether the neck is thrown forward or back with the most force.

You might walk away from a car accident like I did, but neck pain and neck stiffness increases over the next 24 hours, until it may be impossible to move the neck. Ancillary shoulder pain and mid and lower back pain are common. The arms and hands may tingle and become weak and even numb. After a whiplash injury you may also get headaches, dizziness, facial tingling, hearing problems and throat pain.

After whiplash, my neck was so stiff I could not even look from side to side. And worse, my lower back went into complete spasm, resulting in severe, long-term lower back pain that interfered with living a normal life. Every day was measured by how bad the pain was. I was told I should take pain killers and was a candidate for surgery. Back surgery carries a lot of risk, and pain killers are addictive and a terrible way to live. So instead, I dedicated many years to learning what can be done to recover after an injury. There are, in fact, many ways to reduce or eliminate back pain.

The good news is that much back and neck pain is caused by the soft tissues around the spine, the muscles and ligaments, and those are very treatable. I am able now to manage my spinal pain by attending to 5 things that improve my overall health too: Inflammation, Posture, Muscles, Stress, and Sleep. You can learn what you can do, and what back pain specialists can do to help you. Pain is just a signal that something needs attention.

So, if you could make some adjustments that would reduce or eliminate your back pain, would you do it? Really, think about it. It is possible. There are specific ways to:

Brain tumor symptoms can be hard to recognize, simply because of the variety of symptoms that can occur. Symptoms ranging from headaches and neck pain to seizures and stomach problems are all brain tumor symptoms. These symptoms occur when the brain tumor causes damage to various clusters of nerve cells, causing spurious signals or a sudden lack of signals to various parts of your body. Vomiting is more likely to occur in cases of stem cell tumors in the brain. Often, especially in the latter stages, brain tumors cause confusion, loss of reasoning ability, speech problems, memory loss, and impaired concentration. The brain tumor may also cause the victim to sleep much more than usual. Depending on the location of the brain tumor, between fourteen and ninety-four percent of patients suffer some form of seizures. Partial seizures are not uncommon, where, for instance, only the left side of a persons body will go into a seizure. The patient may also remain conscious during a partial seizure, experiencing odd tingling sensations and confusion. Generalized seizures, as are often experienced by epileptics, are not very common in brain tumor cases.

Usually, the specific symptoms and location of a brain tumor will help a doctor diagnose its type. For example, if the tumor is a brain stem gliomas, the patient will usually suddenly develop problems swallowing, impaired hearing or vision, difficulty or clumsiness walking, vomiting after waking up in the morning, nasal or slurred speech, and muscle paralysis on one side of the face.

You sit down at your computer, ready to put in a full day’s work and make some serious headway on your projects. You know you’ll easily be spending 8 to 10 hours sitting in front of the computer.

You’ve set up your computer workstation as effectively as you can figure. Your keyboard is appropriately placed in front of you and your monitor is directly in front of you at eye level. So why will your neck start to hurt? Why will your effectiveness be destroyed by the nagging, aggravating neck pain that seems to show up more and more frequently?

If you are regularly spending a lot of time in front of a computer, you have to realize that your body is going to begin to change and adapt to take on this frequent activity. Your front neck muscles are slowly growing shorter and tighter, while the muscles in the back of your neck are growing longer and weaker.

The back muscles are also growing full of spasm and knots while they are forced to hold up your ten pound head for hours at a time. You would think they would grow stronger from having to hold your head up all the time, but it just never seems to work that way. As they get longer, they are growing weaker, and the job of holding up your head becomes increasingly difficult.

The best options are to do exercises and activities that will counteract the extended computer usage. The rule of thumb is to spend time stretching the front of your neck and strengthening the muscles in the back. This same rule applies to anyone looking to improve posture.

To stretch the front of the neck, turn your head slightly to one side, about forty-five degrees. If you turn your head to the right, you are stretching the left and vice versa. Place your right hand on left side of your chest and pull down gently as you tilt your head back. Stop immediately if you feel sharp pain or any dizziness.

To strengthen the back of the neck, the easiest route would be with a neck exercise machine. Some health clubs have them, but they are more of a specialized device. You can also fold up a towel and place it against a wall. Put the back of your head against the towel and push into it. Hold for a few seconds and release. This is an isometric contraction.

If you are unable to complete some of these movements, or you find that you can’t painlessly move your head backwards, it may be time to visit a chiropractor. The chiropractor will perform a spinal adjustment and restore the normal movement of your spine.

Your neck shouldn’t hurt just because your sitting in front of your computer. You’ve got to work and pain can be a nuisance, but it doesn’t have to be there with a little effort.

The most common misalignment in the neck is a rotation. That is, the vertebra rotates to one side or the other. The first thing you would do is to feel around and find where the neck is tender. It will probably be more tender on one side of the vertebra than the other. The part of the vertebra that protrudes at the back of the neck is called the spinous process. Many muscles attach to it, and when you press into those muscles, you find the tenderness where they are bunched up from the vertebral rotation. Finding what is out and which way is very important, so you know which way to adjust. Feeling for the sore or tender areas is one way to do this. Feel around; get to know what is really going on in your neck.

Adjusting takes a little pressure into the muscles and a rotation of the neck. Pressing into the muscles help them to release, and the natural movement of turning the head brings things back where they belong. For example, say the third cervical which is about two and a half to three inched below the base of the scull has rotated to the right. To adjust, take your left hand behind the back of your neck and press on the right side of the vertebra. The middle finger works well, but it doesn’t matter, just so you can pull into the muscles just to the right of the vertebra and pull it to the left. Gently press into the muscle to release and encourage the spinous process to the left. Drop your chin a little and slowly turn your head to the right allowing your finger to follow along on the muscle as you turn your head. It only takes about four ounces of pressure, sometimes even less.

Neck pain affects almost two-thirds of the global population at some point in their lives.

Diagnosis and treatment of neck pain conditions is the second largest sector of the chiropractic profession, bested only by low back pain. In much the same way as other spinal complaints, chronic neck pain has a tendency to be hard to diagnose and treat, making life a real challenge for anyone who can’t find lasting relief.

Among the many types of neck pain, there are some which stand out as being chronic in nature. These problems may exist due to previous neck injuries, such as whiplash or arthritic degeneration. The most common anatomical issues blamed for causing chronic neck pain are disc pathologies, such as disc desiccation (disc desiccation is abnormal dryness of the discs) and herniations (a tear in the outer, fibrous ring of an intervertebral disc allows the soft, central portion to bulge out). The second most commonly implicated painful process is osteoarthritis (degradation of the joint). Other types of neck pain may include spinal postural concerns, such as hyperlordosis (too much curve) or hypolordosis (too little of curve), cervical spondylolisthesis (anterior displacement of a vertebra or the vertebral column in relation to the vertebrae below ) or non-spinal issues, such as thoracic outlet syndrome (compression at the superior thoracic outlet that affect the nerves that pass into the arms from the neck, and/or blood vessels that pass between the chest and upper extremity. In some cases neck pain may be from an acute spasm or one or more of the supportive musculature of the neck region. You may have just “over did it!”

If you have had chronic neck pain, you could begin to develop neurological symptoms. These may include numbness, tingling, or a “pins and needles” feeling. Sometimes this can be felt in the fingertips or up and down the arm. This could be an indicator that the neck problem is becoming worse.

Most people do not realize how much stress is on their neck, with its great degree of flexibility and support of your 12-14 pound head, coupled with the fact that it has the least amount of muscular stabilization in the spine. This is why a “whiplash’ type injury can have such severe effects. Neck pain may also arise from many other physical and emotional health problems.

The National Center for Alternative and Complementary Medicine (NCCAM) cites Neck pain as the No. 3 reason why people seek alternative medicine care. Reasons for trying CAM include:

-it may work well in conjunction with more traditional type treatment -other traditional treatments have been tried, with unsatisfactory result -CAM is less expensive than traditional treatment -conventional medical professionals suggest it.

Treatments for the different types of back pain and neck pain range from doing nothing to taking medication and undergoing procedures, such as surgery. Treatment of neck pain depends on the cause. For the vast majority of people, neck pain can be treated conservatively.

If you have neck pain it may be wise to consult with a chiropractor before going to the extent of something much more serious such as surgery. Chiropractic has been found to be beneficial in both acute and chronic mechanical neck disorders.

Your chiropractor will ask a number of questions in his or her initial consultation then they will perform a physical examination. The examination will consist of chiropractic tests, orthopedic tests, and a neurological examination. He or she may also perform xrays or other diagnostic imaging tests to gather as much information as possible. This entire process will allow the chiropractor to get to the cause of your problem and allow him or her to come up with a treatment plan and recommendations for your specific condition.

One thing about neck pain to remember is: the spinal cord runs directly through the middle opening of the vertebrae. It sends signals to every muscle, organ, and system of the body. Between each pair of cervical vertebrae, the spinal cord sends out a nerve that runs anywhere from your neck and upper back down to the hands and fingers. This means that if you get pain, numbness, tinging, cold or other symptoms in your hand and arm, it can actually be a problem in your neck! This can often mimic and can be confused with carpal tunnel syndrome, which causes a similar pain in the wrist and hand.
